A Guide to Installing a Solid Oak Floor

If you are choosing to have a solid floor installed in your home then you will have plenty of choices of which type of wood to buy.  One of the nicest woods to buy is oak as it will look fantastic with almost any decor.  There is so much choice in terms of solid oak flooring for sale and a lot of people these days will choose to look online first.  This is a great place to look because there is so much choice and the prices tend to be lower.

You may have decided that you want to install your new floor yourself and this should be fine provided you have some skills in this area.  Otherwise it should really be left to the professionals.  Solid wood flooring installations are more complex than installations of laminate for example so unless you know what you are doing, you should probably get the experts in.  However, if you are determined to do it yourself, the following guide should help to get you on the right track:

The first thing to do is to prepare the floor.  The floor must be clean and dry underneath and you will have to ensure that it is completely level.  This may require you to use levelling concrete.

The wooden boards need to be left in the room where they will be installed for a number of days so that they can acclimatise.  Solid wood tends to expand and contract with changes in temperature so it needs to be in the room that it will be installed in so that it is at the right temperature.

Underlay needs to be installed before the wooden boards because this will act as a moisture barrier.  You can use staples or nails to keep these in place.

The way that the boards should be installed is in a perpendicular direction to the joists. You can make markings on the wall to help you ensure you have straight rows.

Most solid wood flooring will have to be nailed or glued down.  A nail gun is a better option than a hammer.  Pre-drilling holes in the planks will prevent the boards from splitting.

Use boards from different packs so that the grain and colour is randomized. This will give you a more unique floor.

Once you have finished laying the boards, you can finish it off with trims and borders and you will need to polish it up so that it looks great.  Don’t forget to shop around when looking for solid oak flooring for sale because that is the best way to make sure you are getting the deals you want.

Serene on Top – Panic Underneath

Family friends are at present enjoying a cruise.  It is their first wedding anniversary and this time last year they were in Cuba where they got married.  When you think about going on a cruise, with all these wonderful ships on top of the waves, it is really easy to forget about all the subsea services which happen on the sea bed.

These friends although they were only married last October had actually planned their wedding on three previous occasions and due to circumstances beyond their control, for one reason or another, the other three just hadn’t taken place.

Eventually the wedding did proceed and I understand that everyone there had a wonderful time.  The previous weddings had been planned over the last twenty five years – so no-one could say that they rushed into it!

Although they were obviously happy, they eventually had reached the position where they were saying – “if it ain’t broke, why fix it?”  You can sort of understand the logic for this, they had been together for nearly thirty years, and were still together.  The children had all grown up and had their own families so why did they eventually go ahead and get married?

No-one is actually very sure, least of all the couple.  They weren’t doing it for the sake of the children they had just decided that there would be a big party with as many family members there as possible to enjoy themselves.  The date of the wedding was also the birthday of two of the guests, one of their children and the other was the partner of another child.

If you think about a duck and that they are serenely moving across the water, underneath they are paddling like mad, but this can’t be seen.  Subsea services must be similar in that only the oil rigs, platforms and any other structures can be seen above the water whilst many essential processes continue underwater, and only when something happens which is unexpected, and newsworthy, does it bring the reminder of everything which is happening miles off shore in the murkiness of the water.

The wedding was a great success and everything has continued exactly the same as before.  Our friends haven’t moved, or done anything startling!  They had a party for their close family, without all the additional costs of a UK wedding.  Although quite expensive to arrange, the hotel sorted the wedding on the beach and the meal afterwards and I believe that everyone had a wonderful time including my son who is the partner of their daughter, and it was his birthday whilst they were away.

The couple are enjoying their cruise this year, without worrying about what will be happening within the bowels of the ship or deeper in the ocean with the subsea services.

Advantages of Outsourcing Human Resources

A lot of companies are just too busy to take care of many of the day to day tasks that are required and they will therefore outsource these tasks to another firm.  There are many areas where a business would outsource work such as payroll, distribution, accounting and human resources.  Outsourcing has so many benefits to a busy company and the following are just a few examples:• One of the main advantages of payroll, accounting or human resources outsourcing is that it helps to save money.  When it comes to human resources for example, it is very cost effective to outsource this area.  Instead of employing a human resources department it is far better to outsource this to another firm who will take care of the duties of a HR department for less.  This means there will be more capital available for investment in the business.  This is extremely important for a lot of companies especially when they are trying to get their business off the ground.• If you choose human resources outsourcing then you will probably find that it is much more efficient than if you were to deal with it in-house.  These companies will be experienced in dealing with HR issues and will take care of them in a quick and effective manner leaving you free to deal with the running of your business.• Not having to hire staff for a human resources department is a major advantage of human resources outsourcing.  Hiring alone can be pretty expensive when you take advertising into account and then on top of that you will have the cost of training new staff.  If you have a high turnover of staff then you could be looking at a lot of capital wasted.  However, if you have human resources outsourcing then you will not have to worry about this.•

Any time you decide to take on a new project, you can do so in a quick and efficient manner if you have outsourced your human resources.  You do not have to worry about training and hiring new employees.• Being able to focus entirely on the main activity of your business is probably the biggest advantage of human resources outsourcing.  Especially when you first start out in business, this is vital because it means that you do not have to worry about other areas of the business which could distract you from the main objective.

Brochure Printing Service

Despite the popularity nowadays of virtual media as a marketing tool, the business brochure still remains one of the most effective and powerful means of promoting your business or organisation. By using a printing service, your business can have designed a high quality yet cost effective brochure, showcasing your company, your products or your services. Remember that a business brochure serves many purposes and so it is vitally important to ensure that your new brochure has been professionally designed and specifically tailored to your needs so that it contains all the pertinent information that you want to get across to your potential customers.

A well-designed brochure should make a visual impact at the very first glance. The cover design should make your potential clients want to open the brochure and discover its contents. The use of bright, vibrant colours will draw the customer in and the use of a decent-sized, contrasting and highly legible font will ensure that the brochure is easy to read. You can choose between a high impact glossy finish or a sophisticated matte finish for your brochure and printing services experts will advise you what will best suit your individual business. For an even greater visual impact and a more luxurious appearance, brochures can be laminated, which makes them also very hard wearing. You wouldn’t want your brochure to begin to disintegrate after a few months’ use, would you? Different weights (or thickness) of brochure paper and card are also available so ask the printing service to show you some samples so that you know what you can get for your money.

Of course, the content of your brochure is just as important as its appearance. You shouldn’t make the mistake of trying to include too much information, particularly if this would mean that the font has to be uncomfortably too small to read. On the other hand you must make sure that every bit of relevant information about your company, such as your unique selling points, your business’s contact details, the advantages to your potential customer of choosing your business over a competitor, perhaps your commitment to the environment or any business awards that your company has, is there for all to find. The information should be presented and written in a clear, easily understood way and should be checked and double-checked for errors. The printing service experts will no doubt offer a proofreading service along with their design and printing service. Make sure that only the highest quality digital photos and illustrations are used because there’s nothing more off putting to a prospective client than a brochure that looks to be of poor quality.

Your brochure should be your showcase to the world and is a powerful marketing tool that no business should be without. A well-designed, high quality brochure produced by an expert printing service could just give you that competitive edge.

Bike Insurance for Motor Bikes and Quads

With motor bike theft and accidents on the increase, getting the right bike insurance cover has never been so vital. Getting bike insurance cover has been made a lot easier as you can now go online and find many specialist brokers who offer basic bike insurance or who can put together an insurance package for you at the click of a few buttons. The great thing about doing this online is that you are instantly covered by your online insurance broker.

With so many specialist bike insurance companies offering free online quotes it is simple and effortless to find the type of policy that will offer you the perfect solution when it comes to insuring your bike. These specialist bike insurance companies have done a lot of research into what every biker may need to have the ideal cover in place, so whether you are a casual rider or someone who uses the bike for work purposes there is an insurance package available that will suit both your needs and your budget.

Getting bike insurance for quads used to be virtually impossible but by going on the Internet you can find that there are brokers who are willing to cover riders as young as 19 with basic and affordable cover. If you have any convictions you will also find many insurers on the Net who are willing to consider offering you bike insurance but these policies do tend to be slightly more expensive than other policies.

There are many optional extras that can be added to a basic insurance policy and these will give you extra protection for travelling abroad or legal protection should you need to make a claim in the event of an accident. Specialist bike insurance companies have a lot of expertise when it comes to insuring bikers and they know all the things that a biker will ever need to have a comprehensive cover for their bikes.

Claims can be handled online and this makes life a lot simpler for the insured to deal with any problems that may occur during a claim. The advice that the insurance companies offer is valuable especially when it comes to claiming back any uninsured losses which may arise and they will be able to advise you about which solicitor you will have to contact in order to successfully redeem their money.

If you modify your bike in the slightest way you must remember to inform your broker immediately. Failure to do this may result in a claim being revoked by the insurance company. Even if you make a small modification you will need to let them know about it to ensure that your policy will be honored should you need to make a claim.

Staff Vetting

Child protection has been one of the hottest topics in education in recent years, especially in the primary and pre-school age range. Several high profile cases have shown that even the most stringent police checking is not infallible. The onus is on employers to minimise the risk to children in their care and to ensure that their education recruitment policy is as rigorous as possible.

The main criticism of the Criminal Records Bureau check (CRB) or Disclosure in Scotland is that it only provides a snapshot picture of the prospective employee. A certificate is valid for three years, and should something untoward come to light during the three year period, the employer may not find out until the employee comes to renew their certificate. In Scotland, this system is shortly to change and people holding certificates will be entered into a live database. Should any relevant convictions, accusations or cautions be received in that time, details will be passed on to any employers or voluntary group leaders, who will then decide whether or not employment will have to be terminated. This system should mean that employers are kept informed much better than they are at present.

However, CRB or Disclosure checks only come into effect once the employee has been through the interviewing and recruitment process. During the education recruitment phase, the employer must use different techniques to weed out applicants who don’t come up to scratch. Firstly, any CVs must be read carefully, and the recruiter must ensure that any gaps in employment history are accounted for. Be suspicious of a CV with lots of gaps and no explanation. Secondly, always take up references before making a job offer, or ensure that offers are made only on the condition of a satisfactory reference. It is often a good idea to call up past employers and speak to them on the phone as they are more likely to be open and honest about an employee’s strengths and weaknesses on the phone than in anything they have to commit to writing. If there is anything in either the CV or the references which does not feel right, it is always wise to ask the prospective employee for clarification.

Once an employee starts, ensure that they are supervised at all times until relevant documentation is issued. They should never be on their own with children until the CRB or Disclosure certificate has been issued and checked. It is also prudent to have a whistle blowing policy which encourages staff to come forward with any sort of concern or worry they may have about colleagues in order to best protect children in your care.
